Thermo Fisher Scientific Senior Director, Business Strategy in Salt Lake City, Utah

Position Summary

The Sr. Director, Business Strategy has responsibility for researching and recommending organic markets and inorganic targets to gain market share and to maintain our competitive edge. This position leads the market research, competitive analysis and division marketing team. This position works for the Division President but works in collaboration with the four business units and R&D leadership to develop the three to five-year strategic plans including sound investment recommendations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Structure and facilitate to close significant and complex deals in line with business objectives.

  • Studies end market opportunities for technology roadmap improvement recommendations.

  • Direct the scope, timeline, budget, resources and milestones for strategic projects.

  • Prepare, evaluate and present robust financial modeling and analyses to value projects and acquisitions.

  • Identify and source division partnership opportunities from an extensive global network of contacts; screen, analyze and identify potential collaborations, license and acquisition opportunities

  • Understand and provide input on all financial analyses for future revenue projections as well as deal valuation modeling to ensure the highest value.

  • Monitor and analyze the competitive space, consider impacts on strategic positioning and disruption opportunities.

  • Lead the formal strategic planning (STRAP) process of the strategic plans, including coordinating input and analysis of possible initiatives and development of presentations in support with the Business Unit leaders and R&D.

  • Lead the division marketing team to ensure expand the brand and growth.


  • Provide strategic direction to the Divisional Marketing team - build digital capabilities that are best set for the GTM

  • Lead the Marketing team in exchange and engagement value for the customer.

  • Contribute to growth in generating knowledge and building platforms and technology for MSD.

  • Steer the brand strategy in tandem with the strategic direction of the business.

Minimum Qualifications/ Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; MBA or advanced degree preferred.

  • 8+ years in leading business or strategic business planning or business development

  • Experience in life sciences, material sciences or semiconductor space strongly preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience successfully leading business strategy, corporate development projects.

  • Must have a demonstrated track record of transaction experience including M&A, partnership and co-creation or other types of collaborative partnerships.

  • Ability to deliver insightful analysis and modeling and uncover market opportunities

  • Results-oriented, high energy self-starter with high level of personal initiative and an attitude of continuous improvement

  • Strong presentation external relationship development and cultivation skills.

  • Strategic Growth Analysis thought leader - strategic thinker balanced with operational and practical implementation skills.

  • Role model in developing talent to bring strategy marketing insights to the business units for the future.


  • Business Marketing leadership experience a plus.

  • Experience as in a consultancy or investment banking a plus
