Job Summary

The Product Management team in UIT’s Chief Technology Officer ( CTO ) organization provides framework-driven support of CTO services. The team uses pragmatic product management-proven practices to help technical teams define products and services, build roadmaps, develop cost and price models, and communicate with end users and customers. The team’s philosophy is “listen, learn, steer.” Team members and technical teams collaborate to implement user requirements into technical services and solutions.

Product management is the intersection between business, technology and user experience. A good product manager must be experienced in at least one, passionate about all three, and conversant with practitioners in all. IT Product Managers help set the vision for UIT’s CTO Office growing family of services and are responsible for guiding multidisciplinary teams towards a common goal: providing high-quality services and features on time and at a feasible cost. As advocates for both users and the university, IT Product Managers balance diverse perspectives and represent the voice of the customer in service development.

This position is responsible for infrastructure services including: DAS , cloud computing, wired and wireless networking, web hosting, and workplace support including cloud storage of user data.

Located in Salt Lake City, in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, the University of Utah is the flagship institution of the State of Utah’s system of higher education and a member of the PAC -12 Conference. Salt Lake City combines the amenities of a major metropolitan area of more than one million people with the friendliness and ease of living of a small, Western city. University Information Technology, the central IT service provider for campus, reports to the Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the University of Utah’s most critical common IT resources including the campus network; the Campus Information Services ( CIS ) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration services; high performance and research computing; information security; teaching and learning technologies; software licensing; and a host of other systems and applications. This is a Category IIA position: Not required on campus and able to telework during the duration of the University’s COVID -19 response. Employees and/or functions where employees are able to work remotely in order to maintain campus systems, campus operations, clinical operations, and patient care. There may be an occasional need to be on campus periodically when necessary.

Responsibilities

•Lead, plan, direct, and coordinate infrastructure service lifecycles.

•Listen to customers to learn about use cases and needs, and steer both the development and use of infrastructure products.

•Work with UIT leadership and technical area managers to see that infrastructure services are properly planned and resourced, identifying risks and risk response strategies.

•Ensure that service goals are accomplished and in-line with business objectives.

•Realize, measure and report the use, costs, and benefits of infrastructure services.

•Develop and continuously improve UIT -wide product management methodology.

•Conduct needs assessments; develop business cases, cost models, SWOT analysis, product solution hypothesis, knowledge base articles, training materials, user documentation, and marketing materials.

•Create service level agreements and service roadmaps.

•Ensure that service support models are in place, including the creation of support documentation.

•Deliver service presentations and training material.

•Work with end users, project managers, service owners, architecture, service management and communication teams to launch, change, and retire products.

•Assist in preparing serive budgets ensuring consistency with the strategic goals, objectives and resource allocation requirements.

•Perform industry analysis and feature comparisons for competitive product solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires an advanced degree or equivalency, and 8-10 years of experience in product development or in a related area.

Department Specific Qualifications:

•Eight to ten years of experience as a product manager, program manager, or service owner of large, complex, cross-functional IT services.

•Advanced degree (or equivalent experience) in Information Systems, Business Administration, or related discipline.

•Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the job responsibilities.

Preferences

•Knowledge of DAS systems and first hand experience in developing DAS strategies.

•Knowledge of and experience in supporting user data storage in a cloud environment (Box).

•Knowledge of cloud computing and first hand experience in user focused cloud computing support.

•Evidence of continuing education and professional development.

•Ability to influence and achieve results from individuals and groups who do not have direct reporting lines to the IT Product Manager.

•Strong communication skills (written, oral and listening) with the ability to present effectively to large and small audiences.

•Strong leadership and project management skills.

•Demonstrated analytical skills in defining, measuring and achieving program/product KPI’s and benefits.

•Demonstrated use of expert judgment and experience in problem-solving.

•Excellent team player with the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across an organization.

•Familiarity with technology lifecycle models, process/workflow analysis and improvement methods, Quality Assurance principals, and UI design principals.

•Ability to work with stakeholders in all levels of the organization from project team members to CIO , CFO , and Senior Vice Presidents to achieve service objectives for research, education and healthcare at the University of Utah, Hospitals and Clinics.

•Experience with IT products and services in Higher Education and Clinical environments.

•Relevant professional certifications, such as: Pragmatic Marketing Product Manager, ITIL Foundations, or Project Management Professional.
